5 ideas to a spooky Halloween home

Halloween decor tips and tricks for a creepy haunted home

The scariest night of the year has crept on us like the ghostly shadows of the night, creeping, crawling, then BOO! Bring the spooky spirit of Halloween to your home, and celebrate the only time of the year you'll want a house covered in cobwebs, creepy skeletons and frightful bats. Whether you're playing spooky host and want to entertain your guests, or you’re looking to have some Halloween craft fun with the kids, we want to inspire you with these bewitching tips, tricks and treats.

1. Haunting mason jar lanterns

Recycle old mason jars and create your own Halloween lanterns to light up your home and create a haunting, glowing ambience. You can create different styles with all the different terrifying monsters for a great array of fun colours that the kids will love.

Simply cut tissue paper into strips, choosing the colours you need. Then brush a thin layer of Mod Podge to the outer part of jars. After, stick the tissue strips to jar until you cover the whole outside. Then leave the jars to dry upside down. Paint them with spooky expressions and quirky different characters; pumpkins, Frankenstein, witches, spiders, ghosts, or wrap them in bandage and stick googly eyes for some deadly mummies, there’s so much fun to be had!

2. Knock knock… Who’s there?

It’s not all about the candy; treat those trick or treaters to a haunting visual feast at the doorstep. Décor your door with a handmade Halloween wreath, light the pathway with candles in lanterns to create an eerie spooky ambience, and adorn the door with cobwebs, spiders and skeletons. For that extra spooktacular showstopper, why not create your own graveyard in your front garden by creating tombstones with foam boards.

3. Creepy shadows of the night

Dark and fleeting, shadows are a scary feature that plays havoc on our most frightful imaginations. Use black paper and your black magic craft to make spooky silhouettes. They are simple, inexpensive and you can use your Halloween imagination to take your templates wherever you want. Decorate your windows with the templates and they will cast your home with their own scary, misty shadows through the window light. You can also use the templates around the house for haunting creepy figures.

4. The dark art of pumpkins

Practice your dark arts on pumpkins. If you don't like the idea of small children using sharp knives or you want to avoid the mess of carving, painted pumpkins are a great alternative. You can go for different styles and patterns to suit your home or different characters for spooky fun. Funky, retro, sophisticated, quirky, polka dot, stripes or ornate, the choices are endless. Take your creativity and imagination beyond and experiment with different materials; glitter, paper collage, jewels, spray paint or dip half your pumpkin in paint for a stylish colourful look. Get spooky and go wild with your creativity.
